Community Involvement
CS Custom Structures, Inc. is proud to support our community in many ways. We were instrumental in establishing the Lynchburg Green Building Initiative and we worked diligently to organize and support a branch of the US Green Building Council in Lynchburg. We also have provided materials and supplies to the local Habitat for Humanity and have provided architectural assistance to historic Sandusky, at our own expense. We proudly support three Chambers of Commerce and we support “Carrier Days” at local schools. Most recently we have provided educational seminars centered on recycling to local schools and we support children’s softball, baseball and Motocross teams in Central Virginia.
One aspect of our involvement with the Lynchburg Green Building Initiative was our design and construction of an Eco-House for educational purposes. This house was constructed utilizing numerous sustainable living principles and features. Portions of the building were left exposed for the public to see what goes into an energy efficient structure.
The house was open to the public for six months. During that time, we also toured college groups through the house where the professor, students, architect and builder could engage in how this “Green” Eco-House out performed it’s conventional neighbor.
We are proud to be members of the Central Virginia family and will continue to support our community by being good stewards of our environment and helping to enrich the lives of others in our community.

LGBI 2010 EcoHouse Model Home 
We recently designed and constructed Lynchburg's first LEED for Homes residence. This residence, affectionately called the Eco-House was designed as a model home to educate the public regarding new energy efficient systems and "green" principles, products and services that are locally available.
Designed as an educational model house, small portions of construction were left open to public viewing so that visitors could better understand why this house LEED certified and energy efficient.
Educational Elements Included:
• Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating System
• 2x6 Exteriors with 1/2" closed cellulose and R-19 Batt Insulation
• R-50 Roof Insulation
• Passive Radon Reduction
• Reverse Chilled Water System with Storage Tanks
• Daylighting
• Solar Collector for Potable Water as well as Radiant Floor
• Southern Exposure Operable Window Shading
• Water Collection System and Rain Garden
• Low VOC Materials
• Local Materials
• Energy Recovery Ventilator
• Smart House Controllability
• Low Flow Faucets and shower heads
• Direct vent fireplace
• Recycled glass counter tops
• Pervious Concrete Sidewalk
• Building Orientation
• Recycled Construction Waste ... Only 2.25 yards went to the land fill
It was important that this first Eco-House provide lower operating costs, conserve energy and
water, contribute less waste to landfills, reduce harmful greenhouse emissions, provide a
healthier and safer environment for its occupants and demonstrate a commitment to
environmental stewardship.
The house was designed as a technology driven starter residence for young professionals or for
retirees who may be looking to downsize. The house is 1,700 sf of affordable and functional
living space with an additional 600 sf dedicated to garage and storage use. The design allowed
for three options ... a slab on grade, a conditioned crawl space or a true walk-out basement.
The construction of the Eco-House was planned to coincide with the Lynchburg Green Building
Initiative's "Green Expo". Vendors, designers and the General Contractor were present to walk
visitors through the house and explain the benefits of the products and systems within the house.
The house was open to the public for four months.
The success of this house prompted the additional design of a series of energy efficient homes
that are referred to as ''Next Generation Homes". These homes were designed to appear as
traditional cottages on the exterior while being technology driven within.
The Lynchburg Green Building Initiative was instrumental in publishing the Eco-Book, which is
a community resource guide centered on educating the public about "Green" products and
systems and showcasing local businesses that provide a "Green" product or service.
The success of the Lynchburg Green Building Initiative prompted the United States Green
Building Council (USGBC) to allow the formation of a USGBC branch in Lynchburg.
We were proud to be the designer and the builder for this project and in so doing, showing our
support of the Lynchburg Green Building Initiative.
